John’s practice focuses on debt restructuring and commercial litigation, both within and outside of the bankruptcy context.  He has extensive experience in the prosecution, defense and resolution of complex fiduciary, contract, and fraud-based causes of action, including derivative claims.

In the bankruptcy courts, he has performed a broad variety of tasks, including the successful litigation of contested plan confirmation and dischargeability proceedings, and the prosecution and defense of proceedings for relief from stay.

While clients trust their attorney to provide advice and solutions to their questions, one of John’s goals is to promote and engage the client’s own confidence, discernment, and business judgment.

John is admitted to practice in Virginia courts and before the Bankruptcy Court and Federal District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. He served as 2012-2013 President of the Tidewater Bankruptcy Bar Association.  Between 2000 and 2012, he served as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Virginia Stage Company, including as its legal counsel.  John is a 1990 graduate of Dartmouth College and a 1994 graduate of the College of William and Mary School of Law.  He served as an Assistant City Attorney for the City of Norfolk, 1994-2000. He is also a member of the CIVIC Leadership Institute 2018 Class which works to connect executive leaders through service to improve life in Hampton Roads.
